  17. <p>     What she lacks in credibility she easily makes up in
  18. chutzpah. Just minutes after pleading not guilty to six criminal
  19. charges, former First Lady Imelda Marcos stood on the courthouse
  20. steps to announce her bid to succeed Corazon Aquino as President
  21. of the Philippines.

  23. <p>     "There is a cry, there is a need for someone to help our
  24. people in misery," she said. After pledging to "save our country
  25. from suffering," she stepped into her Mercedes stretch
  26. limousine and headed back to her $2,000-a-day hotel suite.
  27. </p>
  28. <p>     Though 41 criminal cases against Marcos are still pending,
  29. the ex-First Spouse's entry into the presidential race is being
  30. taken seriously in some quarters; the masses can expect a long
  31. season of free entertainment and handouts. But her quest to
  32. secure the nomination of the opposition Nacionalista Party
  33. could divide the anti-Aquino forces.
  34. </p>
  35. <p>     While the press would love to see a reprise of the "war of
  36. the widows," Aquino has insisted on 92 different occasions that
  37. she will not seek re-election in May. She even sang her message
  38. on one occasion, warbling to the tune of I'll Never Smile Again
  39. an off-key rendition of I'll Never Run Again.
